CaSES Sociology Summit: Research to Action

This year’s CaSES Summit featured the work of over 200 students in 6 courses – a week of innovative student ideas for social change. Thanks to all the professors, visitors, and most of all the students who brought this event to life with their insight, research, creativity, and commitment to social justice.

Each team from Sociology advanced a strategy for change based on qualitative and quantitative research and deep engagement with their own communities; many engaged local leaders in their neighborhoods to design and refine their proposals. They tackled issues including gentrification and neighborhood change, wage gaps, educational inequality, media representations, and more.

This is sociology in action: these ideas were created to be shared, and many students are now working on implementing their proposals. Please read below their original presentations, strategy proposals, and pictures from the event and reach out if you want to help them take their ideas forward.

Social Innovation at Cal State LA: Partner Up!

This semester approximately 200 students from political science, sociology and teacher education are preparing for the second Civic and Social Entrepreneurship Summit (CaSES) to be held in May 2018. They build on the success of the 120 students who shared their ideas for helping communities improve in December (check out the projects here).

To make this semester’s event even better, we’re looking to recruit even more great collaborators to help with coaching, judging, networking and more. Many of our students have the desire and passion to do good and with your guidance and encouragement, they can transform that into a powerful tool for positively and effectively impacting the people and places around them.

If you’re interested in joining this effort, please take 5 minutes to fill out this form.

In partnership,

Marla A. Parker, Assistant Professor, Political Science

Cal State LA: Redefining Entrepreneurship

CaSES: Civic and Social Entrepreneurship Summit
California State University, Los Angeles
Dec 7-8, 2017

At the first ever CaSES event at Cal State LA, over 100 students presented innovative solutions to wicked problems in their communities. Working with Professor Marla Parker in Political Science and Professor Dmitri Seals in Sociology, students first conducted research in their own communities to explore the connections between course themes and real-life experience. They worked in teams, analyzing qualitative and quantitative data to design solutions and considering the challenges of implementing big ideas for social change.

The final result is a set of presentations that help to define a model of entrepreneurship rooted in responsible research, community accountability, and practical innovation. Thanks to all the partners who made this possible – and particularly to the students who went above and beyond, bringing their classroom learning to life to benefit their communities.
